Since late last year, Simon’s focus has been on talks about evolving the practice of plain language.
On 31 October 2025, Simon delivered a talk titled Popularising Plain Language to 1,000 registrants from the Victorian Public Sector’s (then) 1,600-member Plain Language Community of Practice. In this talk, he made the case for a new framework that encompasses and goes beyond both the term ‘plain language’ and its common qualities (such as the ISO’s relevant, findable, understandable, usable).
In August (2026), Simon will deliver another talk to the VPS Plain Language Community of Practice – which has grown to 2,000 members – to introduce the Helpful Information Framework he has designed to dramatically expand the scope and utility of plain language..
This talk follows one he gave at the inaugural meeting of New Zealand’s new Plain Language Community of Practice (convened by Write Limited) to introduce the framework and the opportunity it presents for practitioners to ‘go beyond plain language’.
